Privacy Policy

Effective Date: May 27, 2026

Canary respects your privacy and is committed to protecting it through this Privacy Policy. This policy describes how we collect, use, and protect information when you use the Canary application and related services.

Information We Collect

We may collect the following types of information:

1. Personal Information

  • Name (if provided)

  • Phone number

  • Contact information of trusted contacts designated by the user

2. Usage Information

  • App activity related to safety checks and alerts

  • Device information (e.g., device type, operating system)

3. Location Information (Optional)

  • If enabled by the user, we may collect and share location data for the purpose of alerting trusted contacts during a potential emergency

How We Use Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Send safety-related SMS alerts to user-designated trusted contacts

  • Enable core app functionality, including safety checks and alert notifications

  • Improve and maintain the performance of the service

We do not use personal information for marketing or promotional messaging.

SMS Communications

Canary uses SMS messaging solely to deliver transactional safety-related alerts. The following terms govern our SMS communications:

  • Messages are sent only when triggered by user activity (e.g., a missed safety check-in or a manually triggered emergency alert)

  • Recipients are individually designated by the app user and are typically friends or family members

  • When first added as a trusted contact, recipients will receive a one-time informational SMS explaining the nature of Canary alerts and how to opt out

  • Message frequency varies based on user activity

  • Message and data rates may apply

  • To opt out of messages at any time, reply STOP

  • To receive help, reply HELP

We do not share, sell, rent, or disclose mobile phone numbers — yours or those of your designated contacts — to any third party for marketing or any other commercial purpose.

Consent

Users are responsible for obtaining consent from any individuals they designate as trusted contacts prior to adding them in the app. During setup, users are explicitly prompted to confirm that each contact has agreed to receive safety alerts before being added.

By being added as a trusted contact, the recipient acknowledges that they have agreed to receive SMS messages related to the user's safety status. Recipients may opt out at any time by replying STOP to any message.

Information Sharing

We do not sell, rent, or share personal information — including mobile phone numbers — with third parties for marketing or commercial purposes.

We may share information only:

  • As necessary to deliver SMS messages (e.g., through our SMS service provider, Twilio)

  • If required by applicable law or valid legal process

Data Security

We implement reasonable technical and organizational safeguards to protect your information. However, no method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Data Retention

We retain information only as long as necessary to provide the service and fulfill the purposes outlined in this policy.

Your Choices

  • Reply STOP to any message to stop receiving SMS alerts

  • Reply HELP to any message for assistance

  • Contact us to request removal of your information from our records

Children’s Privacy

Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Updates will be posted on this page with a revised effective date. Continued use of the app following any update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
