Canary is a harm-reduction safety application that allows users to designate a trusted contact and start a safety session before substance use. This Privacy Policy explains how Canary handles information in connection with its services.
Information Use
Canary is designed to minimize data use. The app only processes the information necessary to provide its core safety features.
When a user starts a safety session, Canary may temporarily process device activity data and, if enabled, location information in order to determine whether to send a safety alert.
Trusted Contact Alerts
When a safety session is active and inactivity is detected, Canary may send an SMS alert to the trusted contact designated by the user.
These alerts may include a secure link to the user’s last known location if the user has explicitly opted to share this information.
Location Information
Location information is only used during an active safety session and only if the user has granted permission.
Location data is shared solely with the trusted contact selected by the user and only for the purpose of enabling a safety check-in.
SMS Communications
Canary uses SMS messaging to send transactional safety alerts.
Messages are only sent when initiated by the user
Messages are not used for marketing or promotional purposes
Recipients may opt out at any time by replying STOP
Third-Party Services
Canary may use third-party service providers to support its functionality, including SMS delivery services.
These providers process information only as needed to perform services on behalf of Canary.
Data Retention
Canary does not retain personal information longer than necessary to provide the service.
Information is not used for analytics, profiling, or advertising.
User Control
Users have full control over:
Whether to start a safety session
Whether to enable location sharing
Who is selected as a trusted contact
Users may stop using the service at any time.
Security
Canary uses reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect information. However, no system can be guaranteed to be completely secure.
